Gene Sledge, 84, of Houston, formerly of Wayne City, died 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at the home of his daughter in Houston.
He was born Feb. 3, 1929, in Hickory Hill near Wayne City, the son of Earl and Pearl (Helms) Sledge. He was married to Sybil Gray who preceded him in death and Barbara Ferris who preceded him in death.
Until retirement, he was the owner and operator of Sledge Oil Company. He was an avid storyteller and always had a joke to share and a tune to whistle. He devoted all of his life and work to his children and family. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by two sons, Billy (wife Karen) Sledge of Mattoon and Larry (wife Brenna) Sledge of Missouri; two daughters, Angela Sledge of Texas and Cathy (husband Mike) Sledge of Missouri; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; five brothers; and one sister.
Graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City with the Rev. Danny Bowling officiating. Those attending the service are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Interment will be at Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City.
