---- — Lois June Shoemaker, 90, of Mt. Vernon, died 1:29 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Mt. Vernon Health Care in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Monday, Oct. 9, 1922, in McLeansboro, the daughter of Orval C. and Anna Mae (Thomas) Duncan. She married Kenneth Ragan Shoemaker I on April 22, 1939, and he preceded her in death on June 30, 1979.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia “Pat” Benson of Mt. Vernon, three grandchildren, Kenneth R. Shoemaker III and wife Nancy of Texas, Wendy Lee Potts and husband Leonard of Dix and Joy Ann Presley of Mt. Vernon; four great-grandchildren, Stephen Gregory Presley II and wife Lula of Fountain, Colo., Richard Alan Presley and wife Lisa of Louisiana, Dillon Arthur Graham II of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Durk Lee Graham of Mt. Vernon; 10 great-great-grandchildren, Caidie Presley of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Nicholas and Stephanie Presley of Fountain, Colo., Richard Lee Presley and Madison Thompson of Louisiana, Christopher Shoemaker of Texas, Thomas Hull, Dillon, Camden and Jaiden Graham, all of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; a brother, Carl Duncan of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; a sister, Nancy Cocogne of Villa Hills, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth Ragan Shoemaker I; two sons, Kenneth R. Shoemaker II and Bobby Shoemaker; a son-in-law, Richard Benson; a grandson, Greg Presley; three sisters, Helen Quinn, Faye Cherry and Norma Mick; and a brother, Charles Duncan.
Lois was a bookkeeper for the government, Montgomery Ward and others. She owned various restaurants over the years. She was a member of the Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 Ladies Auxiliary; the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Turner Roehm AMVETS Post 4 Ladies Auxiliary. She was of the Baptist faith and loved her family; she was a “gold star mother and perfect grandmother,” and an avid reader and bingo player.
Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, with the Rev. Jimmy Bledsoe officiating.
In honor of Lois’ wishes, there will be no visitation.
