Mildred Junkins

---- — Mildred Kathleen Junkins (née Veach), a resident of Mt. Vernon since 1992, passed away at 2:30 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2013, with her son by her side at their home in Mt. Vernon. She had reached the age of 94 years, 10 months and 26 days.

She was born on Thursday, July 25, 1918, in Barren Township, Franklin County, daughter of Everett and Bertha (née Jones) Veach. She married Ralph Arthur Junkins on Sept. 9, 1939. Ralph was killed in action while in the United States Marine Corps at Peleliu Island, South Pacific on Sept. 16, 1944. She never remarried.

Mrs. Junkins is survived by her son, Arthur Junkins of Mt. Vernon; sisters, Pearl Scott of Sesser and Mary Przybyl of Shelbyville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Leora Eubanks and Wanda Coffman; and her only brother, Joseph Veach.

Mrs. Junkins was a world traveler. She traveled, along with her son, to all seven continents, all fifty states and some eighty-five countries. She loved cruises and especially enjoyed a twenty-eight day cruise around Antarctica to the Ross Sea and the Ross Ice Shelf. She was a devoted homemaker, an excellent cook and hostess who enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Visitation will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser. Friends and family in attendance are invited to a luncheon at Valente Banquet Facility, opposite the Operal House in Sesser, immediately following interment.

For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
