Carole Maxine “Goldie” Jones, 75 years and eight days, of Mt. Vernon, died 12:55 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at White Oak Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Friday, April 14, 1939, at home in Wayne County, the daughter of Dwight D. and Beatrice M. (Waters) Elliott. She married Robert A. Jones on March 17, 1977, in Mt. Vernon, and he preceded her in death in 1997.
Goldie was a respiratory therapist at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon for 30 years until retiring and later worked at various doctors’ offices in the Mt. Vernon area. She was a member and past president of the Mt. Vernon Lions Club, a member of Mt. Vernon Moose Lodge 755 (L.O.O.M.) and Chapter 1624 (W.O.T.M.), was of the Protestant faith and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. She spent her whole life taking care of people; she had many friends who referred to her as “Granny”.
She is survived by daughters, Debra Garretson and husband Dick of Smithton and Cheryl Wehrheim of Mt. Vernon; stepchildren, Michelle DeFreitas and husband Dave of Arizona, Suzanne Jones-Schiavone and husband Joe of Arizona, Denise Barregarye of Arizona, Antoinette Kaseberg and husband Michael of St. Louis and Robert “Bobby” Jones and wife Melanie of Arizona; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Randall K. Goldman; and four brothers, Don, Jim, Larry and Kayo “Ralph”.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Women of the Moose will perform the Moose service of tribute. Burial of ashes will be held at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
In honor of her wishes, she will be cremated and a gathering of family and friends will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
