Darlene Elizabeth Schubert, 81, of Mt. Vernon, died 5:47 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Lavender Ridge Dignified Memory Care in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Monday, Oct. 31, 1932, in New Baden, the daughter of Alfred E. and Knola Mae (Haas) Herzing. She married Donald R. Schubert on Nov. 11, 1950, at St. George’s Catholic Church in New Baden.
Darlene worked as a bookkeeper at various car dealerships and also for Don Schubert Enterprises, Inc., an AARP tax aide for over 25 years and a census taker. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for over 20 years and volunteered for the Senior Olympics. Darlene was a member of St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon.
She is survived by two sons, Dale Schubert and wife Karen of Mt. Vernon and Darrel Schubert and wife Barbara of Avon Lake, Ohio; two daughters, Donna Evans of Mt. Vernon and Debra Sandwick and husband George of St. Joseph; 10 grandchildren, Mike Schubert of Mt. Vernon, David Evans of Mt. Vernon, Robert Schubert and wife Olivia of Collinsville, Doug Evans and wife Jasolyn of Edwardsville, Taryn Schubert of North Hollywood, Calif., Lauren Schubert of Cleveland, Mark Sandwick of Champaign, Matthew Sandwick of St. Joseph, Trevor Schubert of Mt. Vernon and Maria Sandwick of St. Joseph; brother, Ralph Herzing of Maryville; two sisters, Dolores Kehrer of New Baden and Diane Meyers and husband Brian of Aurora; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Dennis Roy Schubert; two brothers, Raymond “Bud” Herzing and Ronald Herzing; and one sister, Marilyn Honer.
Memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon with the Very Reverend Father John Iffert officiating. Burial of ashes will be held at St. Mary Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
