Vanita Nell “Van” Harris, 87, of Mt. Vernon, died at 12:10 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Oct. 18, 1926, in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Samuel and Nellie (Moore) Flanagan. She married Wayne Harris on March 9, 1946, in Mt. Vernon and he preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 1998.
She is survived by three sons, Alan Harris and wife Linda of Mt. Vernon, Bruce Harris and wife Dottie of Cape Girardeau, Mo. and Scott Harris and fiancee Cherie Hinkley of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Bonnie Elliston and husband Russell of Mt. Vernon; nine grandchildren, James Harris and wife Emily of Benton, Matt Harris and wife Sara of Mt. Vernon, Lea Mooney and husband Geoff of Mt. Vernon, Corey Harris of Mt. Vernon, Amber Richardson of Carbondale, Scott Snedon of Baton Rouge, La., Heather Beal and fiance Robert Stukenbroeker of Collinsville, Tyler Beal of Mt. Vernon and Jake Beal and wife Andrea of Naval Base Kitsap, Silverdale, Wash.; six great-grandchildren, Wayne Mooney, Hailey Harris, Christian J. Harris, Madison Richardson, Zoie Stukenbroeker and Archer Beal; brother, Donald Flanagan and wife Margie of Waynesville, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Willard, Virgil and Clifton Flanagan; and three sisters, Gene James, Ruth Trout and Velma Flanagan.
Van first worked at the Mt. Vernon Garment Factory, then for the Mt. Vernon Car Shops and she was homemaker and member of Mt. Vernon Church of Christ.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at the chapel at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn with Josh Hartwigsen officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.
Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.
