---- — A. Chris “Mamma” Garden, 73, of Troy, formerly of Salem, passed away on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
Chris was born on Feb. 8, 1941, in Gary, W.Va, a daughter to the late Quince and Nell (Walker) Houck.
From West Virginia, she moved to Chicago and worked as an office manager before moving downstate, as a young women and starting a family. In other phases of her career she worked in hospitality, office management and as a nursing assistant in the Centralia, Mt. Vernon and Salem areas. She will be remembered for her generous heart, strong faith and the times shared with her family and many good friends. Chris was a member of First Baptist Church in Maryville and a former member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Salem.
She is survived by and will be missed by her son, Bryant and (Jill) Morlan of Troy; grandchildren, Brittany Morlan of Mt. Vernon and Tierney Morlan of Troy; great-grandchild, Kahlia Vaughn; stepsons, Bruce Morlan and Brent Morlan; all of the many members of the Garden family; brother, Sam and (Glenda) Houck; sister, Nina Lang; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmom, Ola Mae Houck (Jordan); stepdaughter, Beth Morlan; stepson, Brad Morlan; brothers, Haigy Houck and John Houck; sisters, Virginia Houck and Rita Dotson; and brother-in-law, Pat Lang.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday with a formal service at 7 p.m. with Pastor Paul Byrd officiating at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon.
Memorials in Chris’s memory are suggested to First Baptist Church of Maryville Building Fund or First Baptist Church of Maryville Local Mission Fund.
