Danny Helverson

Danny Keith Helverson, 66, of Chatham, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014, at Sunrise Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Virden.

Danny was born on Dec. 4, 1947, in East St. Louis, to the late Keith and Maurine Boyd Helverson. He was raised and went to school in Mt. Vernon. He married Betty Mathis July 29, 1972, and they moved to the Springfield area.

Mr. Helverson was very active in the Cub Scouts and Abraham Lincoln Council of Boy Scouts of America for 19 years with troops 46 (Riverton), 340 (Auburn), 202 (Little Flower) and 48 (Chatham). The boys often would seek him out for his help in earning their merit badges; he was wood badge trained. He was a leader at the Boy Scouts summer camps at Camp Bunn and Camp Illinek. Danny was the recipient of the District Award of Merit in 2000. He began coaching at age nine and continued for his adult life in baseball, YBA basketball and softball. He was an avid Cardinal’s sports fan and enjoyed watching baseball, basketball and football games.

Before becoming disabled, Danny was the manager of Brown’s Chicken, worked for the State of Illinois for the Secretary of State and IDOT and for Kerasotes Theater.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Betty of Chatham; son, Rodney and daughter, Kelly Helverson both of Springfield; grandchildren, Destiny Helverson, James Kounovsky and Kayleigh Helverson, all of Chatham; cousins; and many friends from sports and scouting.

His family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Staab Polk Memorial Home, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham. A celebration of his life will follow at 7 p.m. with Pastor Nate Randall officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.

For those who wish, memorial gifts may be made to Abraham Lincoln Council of Boy Scouts of America, 5231 S. 6th Street, Springfield, IL 62703 or the American Cancer Society.
