Forrest D. McAlexander, 84, of Mt. Vernon, died 3:50 p.m. Monday, May 5, 2014, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Saturday, Oct. 19. 1929, in Dennison, Kan., the son of Clarence Henry and Ethel Christine (Migchelbrink) McAlexander. He married Virginia Ruth “Jenny” Brunkow on April 25, 1955, in St. Joseph, Mo.
Forrest was stationed in Japan during his six years he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War Era from 1946-52. He owned and operated A-1 Exterminators in Mt. Vernon with his son Terry. He was a founding member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Mt. Vernon. He was a member of the Turner Roehm AMVETS Post 4, Mt. Vernon Elks (B.P.O.E.) Lodge 819 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1376. He was an avid gardener specializing in banana trees and tomatoes; he loved playing billiards with his sons and he loved fishing and playing golf.
He is survived by wife, Virginia Ruth “Jenny” McAlexander of Mt. Vernon; three sons, Michael Ray Brow and wife Carol of Centralia, Bruce McAlexander and wife Elizabeth Ann of Mt. Vernon and Terry McAlexander and wife Lisa of Mt. Vernon; two daughters, Vickii Lynne Zelasko and husband Raymond of Morris and Sandy Humphrey and husband Bruce of Centralia; nine grandchildren, Michelle Zelasko, Khristii Ragain, James Michael Brow, Susan Miller, Stephen Humphrey, Shannon Oglesby, Tobey Reynolds and Keith and Justin McAlexander; sister, Vera Roberts of Tulsa, Okla.; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Ron Reynolds officiating. The chaplain of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct a military flag presentation service at the funeral home. Mr McAlexander will be cremated following the funeral service.
