Charles Curtis Clark, 86, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 1:04 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Aug. 30, 1927, to B.C. “Curtis” Clark and Dena (Potter) Clark. He married Melba Goddard Aug. 1, 1948, in Mt. Vernon and they have one son, Kent Clark of Tampa, Fla.
Mr. Clark joined the Navy while in high school and served 18 months. He later served in the Army in Korea where he met his best friend, Marvis “Red” Marlow. That friendship lasted 60 years until Red’s death in 2013. In that friendship was Red’s family; wife, Betty and daughters, Carolyn and husband Mark Keller and Judy and husband Harry Robertson and granddaughters, Amy and Kathleen Keller.
Charles retired from Illinois Bell Telephone Company in 1982. He also started Lakeside Boat & Motors along with his wife and they ran that business for 48 years until they retired in 2011.
Mr. Clark is survived by his wife, Melba and son, Kent and his friend Cheryl Bradley of Tampa, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Curt and Dena Clark; a sister, Geneva Newman; a brother, Barney S. Clark; a nephew, James Newman; a niece, Carol Jean Newman Cole; a brother-in-law, William Newman; sister-in-law, Kay Clark; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roy and Louise Snow Goddard.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. A Masonic service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home by members of Jefferson Masonic Lodge 368 of Opdyke.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Merle Fullerton officiating.
Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. Members of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors at the cemetery.
