Jerry Bob Jones, 67, of Dix, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 23, 2014, in Mt. Vernon. He went to Heaven surrounded by his loved ones after a lengthy illness.
Jerry was born Thursday, April 10, 1947, in Mt. Vernon, the firstborn child of Samuel Robert “Bob” and Tressie Louise (Richardson) Jones. He was married to Judy McClerren for 19 years.
He was a 1966 graduate of Mt. Vernon Township High School and attended Rend Lake College. He then worked as a dispatcher at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. After that, he worked at Mt. Vernon Township High School in the janitorial department. He retired from Mt. Vernon Township High School in 2008.
He was a born again Christian and loved southern gospel music. He had one of the most beautiful tenor singing voices. He sang with such groups as; The Jones Family, The Prophets and his own personal family. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by two daughters, Devin Morgan and husband Chad of Mt. Vernon and Morgan Jones-Nelson of Mt. Vernon; one son, Chad Jones and wife Becky of Louisville, Ky,; two stepchildren, Jennifer Melton and husband Farrin of Mt. Vernon and Steven Kashycke and wife Kendra of Fairview Heights; his grandchildren, Cadence Morgan, Ethan Morgan, Silas Nelson, Abel Nelson, Paisley Jones, Javin Jones, Sheridan Melton, Addison Melton and Gabe Kashycke; father, Bob Jones; sister, Bobbie Sanders and husband Roger of Mt. Vernon; three brothers, Steve Jones and wife Nancy of Mt. Vernon, Cort Jones and wife Lisa of Mt. Vernon and Kerry Jones and wife Tonya of Mt. Vernon; eight nieces and nephews; and nine great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and one nephew.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mt. Vernon Baptist Temple in Mt. Vernon.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Vernon Baptist Temple in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Tim Reynolds, the Rev. Merle Fullerton, the Rev. David Shores and the Rev. Les Sinks officiating.
