Hattie Davenport, 91, of Chicago, formerly of Effingham and Belle Rive, passed away at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at Lake Shore Nursing Home in Chicago.
She was born in Rend City on July 18, 1922, to Mamie and Alfred Ward. She was the youngest of nine children.
She married Charles Lowery and they had a daughter, Carolyn Ann (Lowery) Slifer. Later she married Everett Edmund Davenport of Belle Rive on May 30, 1948, and they had a son, Everett Dale Davenport.
She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Slifer with her husband Max and their children, Jane Slifer and Jay Slifer with his wife Stacey and their children Taryn, Chloe and Payton; and son, Dale with wife Sharon and their children Phillip, Andrew with his wife Michelle and foster son Marcus Young. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Hattie had a full and active life. She left the farm at 14, after an idyllic childhood and has never looked back. She worked for 32 years at Martin's IGA in Effingham. She was also a faithful member of several Baptist churches including Belle Rive, Bluford First, Effingham First, Rochester First Baptist and Uptown Baptist Church. She had been a wonderful grandmother and in-law in her spare time. Her interests were pinochle, telling stories and collecting snowmen. She was a people person and everyone who knew her loved her.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Pat Pajak officiating.
Interment will follow at Belle Rive Cemetery in Belle Rive.
