Julia Culp (Tate) Morrison, 91, of Mt. Vernon, passed away 10:55 a.m. Thursday May 29, 2014, at the Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon.
Julia was born June 22, 1922, a daughter of Hamilton Beatty “Harry” Culp and Sarah Florence (Brimm) Culp. Mrs. Morrison was married to Lt. Col. LeRoy Dale Tate, United States Air Force. He was killed in 1962. In 1976, she married Lt. Col. George Robert Morrison, United States Army. He preceded her in death in 1997.
Julia was a graduate of Mt. Vernon Township High School Class of 1940. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon, Angels On Assignment, Green Hill Golf Club, Mitchell Museum and the Ladies of the Elks at the Mt. Vernon Elks Club. She was an avid golfer. She enjoyed bridge, gardening, reading and was devoted to her family and friends.
Mrs. Morrison was employed by Standard Oil of Ohio in Mt. Vernon and St. Louis during her early years. She was employed by Corps of Engineers and worked in Carlyle in the Carlyle Lake Real Estate office for six months until the Corps of Engineers began the purchase of land for Rend Lake. She was office manager in the Rend Lake Real Estate Office in Mt. Vernon. She retired from the Drug Enforcement Office in Mt. Vernon in 1977.
She is survived by two sons, Gary Dale Tate and wife Margaret of Cary, N.C. and Stephen Dale Tate and wife Barbara of Geneva; two grandsons, Mitchell Beatty Tate and Spencer MacGregor Tate of Geneva; niece, Sally Elizabeth Swartz of Greenwood, Colo.; two stepsons, Stephen H. Morrison and wife Mary and Robert D. Morrison and wife Sheere, both Mt. Vernon; six stepgrandchildren, Jenna Kilday and husband Matt, Michael Holmes, Jason Holmes, Daniel Morrison, Brian Morrison and Tony Morrison; and nephew, Richard Auten and wife Lucille of McLeansboro.
