Jeff Gill, 54, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 4:13 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Flora, on Oct. 20, 1958, the son of Jack and Sarah (Nosek) Gill.
He married Dorothy Renee (Lovin) on Nov. 23, 1978, in Mt. Vernon, and she survives.
Mr. Gill was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Horton Lane in Mt. Vernon.
He was the head of the Smoke Free Illinois Prison Campaign, which cleared the way for the prisons to be added to the Smoke Free Illinois bill.
Mr. Gill began his career at the Pontiac Maximum Security Facility in Pontiac, working there for 15 years. He then transferred to the Big Muddy Correctional Center in Ina, where he was a sergeant.
Mr. Gill was a volunteer for CASA.
Mr. Gill is survived by his wife, Dorothy Renee Gill of Mt. Vernon; three daughters, Rachel Cohernour and husband Brian of Pontiac, Elizabeth Studley and husband Robert of Pontiac and Sarah G. Gill of Mt. Vernon; three grandchildren, Samantha Cohernour, Noah and Elijah Studley and a grandddaughter soon to arrive; mother, Sarah I. Gill of Salem; and father-in-law, Virgil Lovin of Mt. Vernon.
Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, July 8, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Horton Lane in Mt. Vernon with Pastor Carlos Pena officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
Visitation was held after 12 noon on Monday, July 8, until the funeral hour at the church.
The Johnston Funeral Home in Ina is in charge of arrangements.
