Gerald Allison Diez, age 92, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 11:25 p.m. Thursday, July 4, 2013, at Marion Veterans Affairs Nursing Home in Marion.
Gerald was born in Cobden, on Feb. 18, 1921, the son of Arthur L. and Edna F. (Butcher) Diez. He married Mildred Marie (Green) on July 12, 1942, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and she preceded him in death on Jan. 23, 2013.
Gerald was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church. He was employed by Getty Oil in Mt. Vernon for twenty five years and also worked at Mt. Vernon Township High School for eight years. Gerald was a member of the American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon. Gerald served his country in the United States Army 9th Armored Division during WWII. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his son, Kenneth Diez and wife Kathy of Ina; daughter, Patricia Staley and husband Ted of Westmont; granddaughters, Amy Clark and husband Jay of Leesburg, Ga., Christy Dent and husband Robert of Bonnie, Alicia Johnson and husband Dan of Naperville and Rhonda Yedinak of Naperville; great-grandchildren, Alex and Abby Clark, Leslie and Landon Dent, Kyle, Delaney and Bennett Johnson, John Patrick and Jake Yedinak; and also sisters-in-law, Virginia Hutchinson of Mt. Vernon, Mary Favors of Manteno and Izora Kayser of Arizonia.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mildred Marie Diez.
Private family graveside funeral service will be held at Panther Fork Cemetery in Texico with the Rev. David Shores officiating. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon.
