Dorothy Marcella Lowery, 93, of Mt. Vernon, died 2:01 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Saturday, Jan. 17, 1920, in Pine Lawn, Mo., the daughter of Homer and Stella Marcella (Caudle) Mamer. She married Paul Andrew Lowery in St. Louis on Sept. 16, 1939, and he preceded her in death on June 18, 1998.
Dorothy worked as a waitress for several years and later was employed by Defenders cleaning service at Continental Tire Company in Mt. Vernon. She was a member of East Hickory Hill Baptist Church.
She is survived by six daughters, Leona Guern of Centralia, Judy Whittington and husband Cliff of Ina, Jane Gentry and husband Robert of Dahlgren, Kay Poston and husband Larry of Mt. Vernon, Sharon Claar and husband Eddie of Cape Girardeau, Mo. and Paulette Herron and husband Mike of Galatia; three sons, Dick Lowery and wife Diane of Bluford, David Andrew Lowery and wife Sherri of Centralia and Dennis Allen Lowery and wife Roni of Flora; brother, Jim Mamer of Streator; sister, Ruth Helpingstein of Fairfield; 48 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many, many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons-in-law, Ernie Young and John Guern; four grandchildren, Ashley Halbin, Jennifer Young, Richie Claar and Wally Claar; one brother, Homer Mamer, Jr.; and two sisters, Leona Haley and Helen Rodgers.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Gale Breeze officiating. Interment will be at East Hickory Hill Cemetery in Jefferson County.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
