---- — Lawrence B. “Bennie” Melton, 87, of Mt. Vernon, died 1:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, at his home in Mt. Vernon,

He was born Thursday, Jan. 14, 1926, in California, the son of Ralph and Margaret Julia (Barva) Melton. He married Ruth Waterman and she preceded him in death. He later married Lois Tate and she preceded him in death. He married Hazel Fay Donohue on Jan. 10, 1972, in Virginia, and she preceded him in death on July 12, 2008.

Bennie served in the U.S. Marine Corps and later was a right-of-way agent for the Ashland Oil Pipeline Company. He was a member of the Jefferson County Shrine Club, Old Tymers Car Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1376 and Mt. Vernon American Legion 141.

He is survived by his daughter, Deonna “Dee” Schreiber of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren, Artie Highfill of Mt. Vernon, Davina Overbey and husband Brad of Mt. Vernon, Tammy Melvin and husband Johnny of DuQuoin and Lee Ann Smith of Encino, Calif.; eight great-grandchildren, Nicholas Tobin of Encino, Calif., Trent Barber and Trevor Barber of Mt. Vernon, Tylyn Highfill and Luther Highfill of Mt. Vernon; Tyler Barber and wife Micole of DuQuoin and Rayleigh Overbey and Braxton Overbey of Mt. Vernon; three great-great-grandchildren, Ellee Barber of DuQuoin and Liam Tobin and Andrew Tobin of Encino, Calif.; brother-in-law, Red Gentles of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces and nephews, including special niece, Margaret Ann Marasco and special nephew, Leo Shehorn. His extended family in Morehead, Ky., also survive.

He was preceded in death by parents; three wives; two sisters, Bernadine Shehorn Davis and Alpha Gentles; son-in-law, David Schreiber; and one great-grandson, Sgt. Andrew Tobin.

Funeral mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon with the Very Reverend Father John Iffert officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. Members of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors at the cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. A Shrine walkthrough service will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
