Coral Lee Schreck, 84, of Mt. Vernon, died 6:29 p.m. Sept. 11, 2013, at Mt. Vernon Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Nov. 25, 1928, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Homer Roosevelt and Nellie Lillian (Eubank) Scott. She was first married to Donald Laughmiller on Oct. 12, 1947, and was married for 31 years. She later married Edward D. Schreck on Nov. 22, 1981, in St. James, Mo., and he preceded her in death on Nov. 5, 2008, and they were married for 27 years.
Coral Lee was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church and then the First Church of God, herb club and was a 4H leader for many years. She worked at Florsheim Shoe Factory in Mt. Vernon, Hollywood Candy Factory in Ashley and was a CNA at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon and later in life cleaned houses. She loved to square dance and enjoyed sewing her own dresses and she made beautiful crafts and displayed them at craft fairs for many years. She was an excellent seamstress. She owned and operated Schreck’s Maple Leaf Farm and grew and sold many herbs and vegetables in the local area.
She is survived by two sons, Marshal Laughmiller and wife Dorothy of Navarre, Fla. and James Laughmiller of Mt. Vernon; two daughters, Lila Speidel of Texico and Nina Dycus and husband Robert of Mt. Vernon; 10 grandchildren, Marsha Ward and husband Moe, Cara Emrich and husband Chris, Lonnie Speidel and wife Keri, Kim van Rossum and husband Dirk, Christina Cheek and husband Brett, Amanda Speidel and Kaylee, Kaycee, Kaydee and Kenzee Dycus; 10 great-grandchildren, Heather, Nicholas, Gillian, Gwendolyn, Baylor, Brody, Elijah, Hunter, John and Alex; two brothers, James Scott of Mt. Vernon and Orland Scott and wife Arlene of Homesworth, Ohio; three sisters, Joyce Martin and husband Bill of Joliet, Beverly Scott and husband Clarence of Wood River and Mae Newland and husband Chuck of Cresthill; and several nieces and nephews.
