Gale E. Howell, 89, of Mt. Vernon, died 9:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at Illinois Veterans Home in Anna.
He was born Wednesday, June 4, 1924, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Robert and Leatha (Moore) Howell. He married Norma L. Holland on July 3, 1946, in Mt. Vernon, and she preceded him in death on July 8, 2010.
Gale served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. He worked at Security Bank & Trust of Mt. Vernon for 31 years as a cashier and in the Note Department; he was a 55-year member of Park Avenue Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, worked in the church’s food pantry program, the Mobile Meals and was a deacon. He was an active member of Kiwanis International Club in Mt. Vernon, was a Jefferson County Board Precinct Committeeman, was a member of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 and United Commercial Travelers Insurance and he was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
He is survived by his daughter, Karen Howell of Mt. Vernon; stepgranddaughter, Gianna; sister-in-law, Ruth Howell of Belleville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Steven Howell; and eight brothers.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Chuck Ellis and the Rev. Mark Howell officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. The chaplain of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct a flag presentation service at the cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
