---- — Pastor Dee Wayne Heil, 62, of Mt. Vernon, died 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.

He was born June 24, 1951, in Eldorado, the son of William and Rena (Gillihan) Heil. He married Molly Sanchez on June 28, 1972, in Moab, Utah.

Dee Wayne was an Eagle Scout. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as a military policeman (MP). He was retired from the Illinois State Police crime scene department and was also retired as assistant chief of the Carmi Police Department. He was currently working for East Carondelet Police Department as a detective. He was also an instructor at Southwestern Police Academy (SWIC) in Belleville and was currently a licensed private investigator. He had been pastor of the New Life Harvest Church in Mt. Vernon for 13 years. He was a life member of Vietnam Veterans of America and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 262 in Belleville. If someone wrote a book about Dee’s life, nobody would believe it. No one could have done everything this man had done in his life.

He is survived by his wife, Molly Heil of Mt. Vernon; son, David Heil and wife Samantha of Belleville; daughter, Raeline Heil and John McKinley of Belleville; and four grandchildren, Dakota Heil, Cassie Chatham and Joshua and Kaitlyn McKinley.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at New Life Harvest Church in Mt. Vernon with Pastor Ed Schmulbach officiating. Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at North Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi. Members of the Carmi American Legion Post and Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors at the cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. A law enforcement walk-through will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
