Carl E. Staples, 78, of Metropolis, died Feb. 28, 2013, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.
Carl spent his younger years in Mt. Vernon. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. After his discharge, he moved to the Aurora area, where he lived for 50 years prior to moving to Metropolis.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Mason and husband David of Metropolis; four sons, Carl M. Staples and wife Shirley of Montgomery, Steven Staples and wife Michele of Crystal Lake, James Staples and wife Kristine of Wheaton, and Jerald Staples of Schaumburg; grandchildren, Joshua Staples and wife Ginger of Jonesboro, David Mason and wife Kelsey, Bodhi Mason and Matthew Mason of Metropolis, Brittnye Wise and husband John of Yorkville, Amanda Staples of El Paso, Texas, Alex Staples of Montgomery, Ty Staples and Taylor Staples of Crystal Lake and Jack Staples and Haley Tenute of Wheaton; and one great-grandchild, Hayden Staples of Jonesboro. Other survivors include eight sisters and four brothers, Virginia Fern Jines of Mt. Vernon, Dorothy Dale of Big Rock, Linda McClintock and husband Larry of Rock Falls, Shirley Colville of Rock Falls, Peggy Wittenben and husband Mike of Love Lady, Texas, Vicky Simmons of Rock Falls, Debra J. Hallen and husband Herb of Dover, Diane Cox and husband Brad of Rock Falls, Virgil W. Staples and wife Janice of Mt. Vernon, Larry Staples and Phillip Staples, both of Rock Island, and Ricky J. Staples. He leaves numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Virginia Staples; and two brothers, LeRoy Staples and John Staples.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Healy Chapel, 370 W. Division Drive, Sugar Grove. The family welcomes all friends.
