Virgil Paul Hunt

Virgil Paul Hunt, 83, entered Heaven to live with Jesus, his Savior, on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren.

Virgil was born Nov. 9, 1930, in Herrin, to Fay (Cavitt) and Jace Hunt. He attended Herrin High School, graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School and went on to attend the Vocational Technical Institute.

Virgil married Elizabeth Ann Rogers on May 31, 1952. He was employed by Brown and Colombo as a service technician and also worked as a coal miner for Old Ben 25.

Virgil attended Herrin First Christian Church and gladly served during church services and at church meals. He was an active volunteer for the Herrin pantry through his church and was also a member of the Elks and American Legion.

Virgil served in the military in the 8th Army Ranger Company in Korea and has enjoyed numerous Ranger reunions in various states over the years. He loved his Lord, church, family and country and had a heart for service to all.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, of Herrin, two daughters and their spouses, Margaret Childers and husband, Bruce of Carterville and Donna Norris and husband, Steve of Waltonville; grandchildren, Mallory (Andrew) Martin of Carterville, Ashley (Travis) Paddock of Olney, Lindsay (Chris) Harvey of Mt. Vernon, and Wesley Norris of Normal; great-grandchildren, Jace and Jaxe Paddock, Alivia Harvey and Josie Martin; sister, June (Bob) Barnes of Tustin, Calif., and nephews, David Barnes and family of Long Beach, Calif., and Greg Barnes and family of Dallas, Texas; and numerous other family and friends.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 11, at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin with ministers, Ron Henwood and Derek Levins, officiating.

Interment with military graveside rites conducted by the Herrin American Legion Post #645. Baker-Ladd V.F.W. Post #1567 and the Illinois Army National Guard Honor Detail will be in Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made in Virgil's honor to Hospice of Southern Illinois or Herrin First Christian Church.
