Eugene “Gene” Thompson, 83, of Mt. Vernon and formerly of Centralia, passed away at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at Nature Trail Healthcare in Mt. Vernon.
He was born on Jan. 1, 1930, in St. Louis, the son of Eugene Thompson Sr. and Mildred (Reynolds) Thompson. He married Leila (Hampton) on Dec. 31, 1968, in Granite City, and she preceded him in death in 2006.
Mr. Thompson is survived by four sons, Jim Thompson and wife Terri of Mt. Vernon, Ken Thompson and wife Jennifer of St. Louis, Jimmie Lee Murray of Belleville and Gary Murray of Belleville; three daughters, Donna Dwiggins of Cahokia, Cynthia Matthews of Belleville and Paula Thompson of Atlanta; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and a half-brother, Bill Thompson.
Mr. Thompson worked for the Burlington National Railroad for 44 years as yardmaster in East St. Louis, then in Centralia. He was a longtime area resident. He was a member of the Moose (his status as a Pilgrim). He was a sergeant in the Army during the Korean era from Jan. 19, 1949, to Nov. 4, 1949.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia with Men of the Moose officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillcrest Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by VFW Post 2055 and American Legion Post 446.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
