Lowell G. Melton

MT. VERNON — Lowell G. Melton, 84, of Mt. Vernon, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.

He was born in Orchardville on Aug. 18, 1926, the son of Harvey and Effie (Dickey) Melton. He married Eva Swartzlander on June 4, 1950, in Mt. Vernon, and she survives.

Mr. Melton was a World War II Army veteran, serving from Jan. 12, 1945, to July 16, 1947. He was a member of the Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge. He was a Shriner and member of the Jefferson County Shrine Club and was also member of the Ainad Temple in East St. Louis. Mr. Melton was a member of Mt. Vernon York Rite, Andrew D. Webb Chapter 160 Royal Arch Masons and Patton Commandery 69 Knights Templar.

Mr. Melton is survived by his wife; a son, Kenneth Melton and wife Roberta of Moncks Corner, S.C.; a daughter, Deanna Derry and fiancé James Willis of Mt. Vernon; a grandson, Jason Lowell Derry and wife Latricia of St. Peters, Mo. and their children, Autumn, Jakob, and Logan; a granddaughter, Kristine Williamson and husband Jacob of Moncks Corner, S.C.; and two nephews and eight nieces.

Mr. Melton was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Johnston Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Elaine Bush officiating. Burial will be in Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City.

Visitation will be after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with a Shrine walkthrough at 11 a.m.

Johnston Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon is in charge of arrangements.
