Charles Gross

MT. VERNON — — Charles E. Gross, 92, of Mt. Vernon and formerly of McLeansboro, died at 3:10 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at his home.

He was born on Oct. 7, 1920, in Hamilton County, a son of David and Fannie (Greer) Gross. He married Vada Pauline Ray on June 1, 1979, and she survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Verla Mae Keele and special friend C.E. Cooper, Patricia Marie Hamption of Mt. Vernon, and Davita Sue Head and husband David of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a nephew, John David DeFore of Midland, Texas; a niece, Sandra Wegner of Midland, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Rosalee DeFore.

Mr. Gross was a retired electrician and worked at Rend Lake Water Department until retirement. In his earlier years, he worked for the City of McLeansboro as a meter reader, power plant operator, and water plant operator.

He graduated from McLeansboro High School in 1938. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of Mt. Vernon American Legion and the First United Methodist Church in McLeansboro.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Jim Peak officiating. Interment will be in Hickory Hill Cemetery near Broughton with graveside military rites provided by the American Legion Post 106, McLeansboro.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
