---- — William Ernie “Bill” Smith, 68, of Mt. Vernon, died 5:05 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Fla.

He was born Friday, April 27, 1945, in Chicago, the son of Normville Allen Smith and Frances Clarissa (Dornan) Smith. He first married Mary Ann Burke. He married Peggy Larson on May 11, 1991, in New Lenox.

Bill was a pipefitter for 35 years, including at Chicago area nuclear plants before retiring. He was a former volunteer EMT at Homer Township Fire Department. He was proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. He loved travel, going on cruises and was a fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. And he was a member of Chicago Pipefitters Local 597 and a member of the Christian faith.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Larson Smith of Mt. Vernon; son, William (Erin) Smith of Orland Park; daughter, April (Chris) Delaney of Plainfield; four stepchildren, Brett (Amy) Clevinger of Joliet, Jerry (Dawn) of Plainfield, Carmen (Richard) Gradford of Mt. Vernon and Douglas Lopez of Chicago; grandchildren, Jacob Smith, Zach and Breanne Delaney (April) of Plainfield, Kelsey (William) of Orland Park, Cody and Nina Clevinger of Joliet, Tyler Sanville of Washington D.C. (Brett), Zachary and Ryan Clevinger of Plainfield (Jerry), Terionna Chandler and Kainan, Kamryn and Kyan Caruth of Mt. Vernon (Carmen); one sister, Frances Carol Gaetz of Clearwater, Fla.; one brother, Wayne Frost Smith (Renee) of St. Petersburg, Fla.; sister-in-law, Karen Smith of Blue Springs, Mo.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, the Rev. Melvin “Buck” and Wilma Larson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Normville Allen Smith.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Ralph Wilton officiating. In honor of his wishes, he will be cremated following the funeral service.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
