---- — Jerry R. “J.R.” Nance, 82, of Mt. Vernon, died 2:55 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Thursday, April 9, 1931, in East St. Louis, the son of Orley R. and Sarah E. (Stringer) Nance. He married Dorothy Louise Unfried on March 16, 1975, in Dahlgren.
Jerry was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and served from April 1952 to April 1956, and was a crew member aboard the USS Richard E. Kraus (DD-849). He later was a carpenter and operated “J.R.’s Clock Service”. He gave his life to the Lord on July 22, 2012, and on March 16, 2013, he and his wife Louise renewed their wedding vows at Christian Fellowship Church in Mt. Vernon after 38 years of marriage. He enjoyed tennis, gardening, reading and the outdoors and was a member of Christian Fellowship Church in Mt. Vernon.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Nance of Mt. Vernon; brother, Bill Nance and wife Norma of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Maurice Nance; and a nephew, Michael Hale.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at Christian Fellowship Church in Mt. Vernon with Elder Don Summers officiating. Members of the Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors at the church.
In honor of his wishes, his body will be donated for anatomical study and his family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at Christian Fellowship Church in Mt. Vernon.
