James Robert Askew, 66 years and 21 days old, of Mt. Vernon, died at 9:50 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at the Marion VA Medical Center in Marion.
He was born Nov. 14, 1947, in Mt. Vernon, the son of James Loyd and Katherine (Lemay) Askew. He was first married to Karen Kincaid. He later married Judy Smith on April 23, 2000, in Mt. Vernon.
He is survived by his wife Judy Askew of Mt. Vernon; a son, Aaron Askew and wife Rebecca of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; grandchildren, Dylan, Ashlee Braxton, Cayden, Noah and Wyatt; great-grandson, Remington; one sister, Ruby Ann Davis of Mt. Vernon; stepson, Greg Martinez and wife Stacy of Mt. Vernon; stepdaughters, Kirsta Payne and husband Rob of Mt. Vernon, Melissa Lorch and husband Rick of Indianapolis and Michelle Chrum and husband Frank of Mt. Vernon; several stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was a member of the New Life Harvest Church. James also served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at the New Life Harvest Church in Mt. Vernon with Gwen Southerd and Mr. Ron Davis officiating. Interment will be in Old Orchard Cemetery in rural Jefferson County. American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
