Richard E. Hopper, 76, of Mt. Vernon, died 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Oct. 18, 1937, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Clarence and Blanche (Creamer) Hopper. On May 3, 1957, in Mt. Vernon, he married Emmarillis Joann Reaney, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 29, 2004.
Mr. Hopper attended Mt. Vernon Township High School. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the National Rifle Association. He retired as the head sawyer at Garren Sawmill in Boyd.
He is survived by two sons, Richard H. Hopper and wife Sue of Texico and James A. Hopper of Dix; daughter, Carole M. Hopper of Mt. Vernon; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Jerry W. Hopper of Bluford; and one sister, Pauline Ricchetti of Jackson, Miss.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Emmarillis Joann (Reaney) Hopper; and an infant son, John Calvin Hopper, II.
A graveside funeral service for Mr. Hopper will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Hopewell Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon.
There will be no public visitation and friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery.
