Charles Green, 70 years and five months, went to be with his Lord and savior 6:15 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, from White Oak Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
He was born Thursday, Dec. 10, 1942, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Earl and Lorene (Scott) Green. He married Mary E. Rodgers on May 11, 1963, in Mt. Vernon; she survives in Mt. Vernon.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sisters-in-law, Donna A. Green of Mt. Vernon and Shirley J. Belmont of Bluford; and several loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Clyde Calvin Green; a brother, John R. Green; brothers-in-law, Sonny Belmont and Don "Buck" Rodgers; paternal grandparents, the Rev. Bird and Carrie Green; and maternal grandparents, D.C. and Nancy Jane Scott.
Charles graduated from MT. Vernon Township High School in 1961. He served in the U.S. Army Military Police from 1966 to 1968. He was a firefighter at the Jefferson Fire Protection District and in 1972, transferred to the Mt. Vernon Fire Department, retiring after 20 years of service. He was employed as a courier for Good Samaritan Regional Health Center and later worked as a driver for Ford Square in Mt. Vernon. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church. Charles was an avid license plate collector, an old car hobbyist, a NASCAR fan and loved gospel music. Both Charles and his wife loved their family dearly and the time they got to spend with each other. They also enjoyed traveling.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home with the Revs. Merle Fullerton and Gary Davenport officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Woodlawn. Members of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors at the cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
