Clayton Colin Cross, Jr., 66, of Mt. Vernon, died 10:12 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at his sister’s home in Bonnie.
He was born Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1947, in Lansing, Mich., the son of Clayton Colin Cross, Sr. and Rosemary (Densteadt) Cross.
Clayton was a member of the U.S. Navy Seal Team during the Vietnam War serving from Aug. 17, 1965, to Dec. 20, 1968. Following his military service he was a general contractor and avid sportsman and outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback riding and bow hunting.
He is survived by his son, Clayton Colin Cross, III of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Dakota Cross of Mt. Vernon; two brothers, Bill Johnston and wife Jennifer of Irvington and Rick Johnson of West Plains, Mo.; sister, Serena Campbell of Bonnie; loving companion, “Itty Bit” of Mt. Vernon; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Vonnie Hofer.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Pastor Jeff Stewart officiating.
In honor of his request, Mr. Cross will be cremated and a gathering of friends and family will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
