Henry P. Kiefer, 87, of Belle Rive, passed away 2:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Hamilton Memorial Nursing Center, surrounded by his four daughters.
He was born Nov. 28, 1926, in Dahlgren, the son of Xavier Kiefer and Frances (Roesch) Keifer. He was born in the home of his parents where he lived his entire life. The house was built by his grandfather Leopold Kiefer. He married Rita Rapp on June 30, 1949, in Dahlgren. They were married in St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Dahlgren.
He was a farmer - dairy, chickens, hogs, grain, apple orchards, honey bees and pecans. It was a family farm since the 1890s. Henry was a bus driver for Unit 10 School District for 18 years. He was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Dahlgren. He was with Dahlgren Volunteer Fire District for over 20 years and a member of Knights of Columbus Council 8745 and the Farm Bureau. He loved spending time with his grandkids from sitting on the floor building with Lego blocks to taking them fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Marie Kiefer of Belle Rive; four daughters, Patricia Shaw and husband Larry of Ina, Joyce Stevenson and husband Gaylon of Ithaca, Mich., Maureen Kramm and husband Robert of West Frankfort and Sandra Reyling and partner Steve Coy of Dahlgren; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren with two on the way; and numerous nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Fournie, Mary Ann Karcher, Lucille Karcher, Catherine (Katy) Kiefer and Olivia Karcher; and two brothers, Albert Kiefer and Leopold Kiefer.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church with Father Slawomir Ptak and Deacon Ronald Karcher officiating. Burial will be at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Cemetery in Dahlgren.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Harre Funeral Home, Dahlgren. A rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Due to family health issues, please refrain from wearing perfumes, colognes or having live flowers.
Memorials may be made to the Dahlgren Fire Department and will be accepted at the funeral home.
