Terry Linn Witzel, 64, of Woodlawn, went to be with his Lord at 7 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at his home in Woodlawn.
He was born Friday, Nov. 19, 1948, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Charles “Red” and Greta (Roberson) Witzel. He married Sherry Lynn (Crider) Gutzler on July 3, 1999, in Woodlawn.
Terry attended Grand Prairie Grade School, Woodlawn Grade School and graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1966 and from Rend Lake College with a degree in engineering. Terry was employed as a district manager with Burger Chef, Inc., and then with Continental General Tire as a maintenance supervisor from 1986, retiring in 2008. Terry was the owner and operator of Witzel’s Gunsmithing Shop where he spent many hours repairing as well as crafting his own guns. He was an avid sportsman and hunter. He was a benefactor member of the NRA and Patron Member of the Illinois Rifle Association. He was a collector of antique muscle cars and enjoyed riding his Harley and Triumph motorcycles. He was a dedicated follower of the Woodlawn Cardinal basketball team and occupied a front row seat at every game. Terry was a member of Fouts Christian Church in Cravat, the church he was raised in and loved going there. Terry touched so many people’s lives with his kindness and his unusual wit. He was known for his ability to recall events in history and sports as well as his vast knowledge of guns. He loved his family dearly and treasured the time he spent with them. He will be so deeply missed by his loving family and the many friends he cherished throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry Lynn Witzel of Woodlawn; four sons, D. Shane Witzel and wife Leslie of Woodlawn, Kerry D. Witzel and wife Lisa of Mt. Vernon, Heath Gutzler and wife Paula of Mt. Vernon and Shane Gutzler and wife Emily of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren, Chelsea, Regan and Abby Witzel, Kadance, Bradyn and Breanna Gutlzer; sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and Buck Williams of Woodlawn; cousins, Delores Mount, Monty Bradford, Carol Glickman, Rick Meador, Jody Dame, Paula Hutchison, Iris Hartman, Becky Barbour and Rodney Roberson; nephews, Doug Williams and wife Patty and Chad Witzel; nieces, Sonya Williams, Robyn Mays and husband Darrell, and Tisha Rueter and husband Brad; great-nephews, Levi Sprehe, Trey Bruce and Tejay Bruce, Devon Witzel, Todd Johnson and Travis Hopkins; great-nieces, Brittany Williams, Taylor Sprehe, Derricka Witzel and Treva Hopkins; and very special aunt, Ruby Shelton of Mt. Vernon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; paternal grandparents, Charles and Florence Witzel; maternal grandparents, William and Ora Roberson; a brother, Gary W. Witzel; four uncles, Bill Roberson, Harry Maulding, Floyd Bradford and Gene Meador; five aunts, Oleta Blozis, Wanda Young, Mary Bradford, Helen Roberson and Louise Maulding; three cousins, Robly and Sohnnie and Michael D. Roberson; brother-in-law, Robert W. Crider; in-laws, Robert and Pauline Crider; and one niece, Kreshia Miller.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Fouts Christian Church in Cravat with Mr. Jerry Wilson officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Fouts Christian Church in Cravat.
