MT. VERNON — A couple of notes on the eve of Mt. Vernon Township High School's football opener …

-We're going to try coveritlive as a live chat from the press box when the Rams take on Miller Career Academy Saturday, so check the sports wibsite for that.

-A few notes on Miller Career Academy: As coach Dan Mings said, they're big, fast and athletic. The Phoenix averaged 36.2 points per game last year and their quarterback, Demarco Billups, threw for almost 255.1 yards per game.

-We might as well keep this running, as MVTHS cross country runner Stephanie Modert excells on the course and is the english language's last repository of fish jokes. Modert's fondness for marine humor was already documented in the fall sports preview, and today she let loose another one:

"What good's a screen door on a submarine? It keeps the fish out."
