Midweek tidbits: volleyball, soccer, golf

Powell Latimer

MT. VERNON — A conference championship and a rivalry game are both in the works as the week winds on.

Mt. Vernon boys golf vs. South 7 Conference Meet, Thursday.

-The Rams are coming straight off some of their best golf this season as they head into the conference tournament. While they might not be able to top Althoff, the runaway South 7 leader, they've shown the ability to best just about everyone else. Quinn McClure's team has gotten near-par scores from four different golfers this year, and if all of them have a good day at Governor's Run, it is possible for Mt. Vernon to pull the upset.

Mt. Vernon volleyball vs. Centralia, Thursday

-Mt. Vernon is looking to avenge a dissapointing loss earlier this season at Centralia. The Annies humbled MVTHS, and Katelyn Kombrink's team wasn't happy with it. MVTHS has some momentum after a successful spurt of tournaments and matches won, and it hopes that Changnon is less hospitable than Centralia.

Mt. Vernon boys soccer at Carbondale, Thursday

-9-1 was the score last time these two teams met, and Mt. Vernon still feels the bitterness of that one-sided defeat. The Rams are coming off a 5-1 loss to Marion where they might have been looking towards Carbondale already, but the youthful MVTHs defense can still be taken advantage of by lethal scorers like Carbondale's. If the Rams can avoid an early goal and generate some attacks, they stand a chance at pulling the upset. But that's one heck of a big if right now.
