Creating an appreciation for what lies under your nose isn’t always easy.
But the Downtown Mt. Vernon Development Corporation found that people are interested in the history and unique characteristics of the area Thursday during the District After 5 event.
Trolley tours of the downtown area with volunteer guides from the Jefferson County Historical Society were a huge hit. The guides provided fun and education for residents.
While many residents drive by the 5th Appellate Courthouse every day, not as many had been able to see the inside of the historic building until the DMDC event, and those who went on the tours were regaled with stories and information about the courthouse by 5th Appellate Court historian Jack Flood.
The event was a celebration of what is special about the downtown area. As the DMDC works to renovate and breathe life into the district, they are also reminding people of why the area is worth the time and effort it takes to make it a special place for visitors.
