Mulch: Proud of Relay effort; more work ahead

Editor:

Most of our community is aware that June 5 and 6 was the Jefferson County Relay for Life event conducted at Mt. Vernon Outland Airport. It was another huge success this year and we were honored to be a part of this very worthwhile cause.

Our county should be very proud of the outpour of participation and concern that was represented during this year’s Relay campaign. It was truly amazing. There is a tremendous amount of time, effort and volunteerism that goes into an event of this magnitude. Thirty teams from across Jefferson County worked diligently to raise funds to fight the battle against one of our most dreaded diseases — cancer. These teams, along with our area coordinators, all worked hard. We know they will agree that once you witness the Survivor’s Lap and view the Luminary Ceremony, it makes your efforts all worthwhile. We personally believe we have one of the best groups in the nation and all of their hard work and dedication is to be commended. This is evident in what has been accomplished so far this year. As of Saturday, June 6, Jefferson County raised a little over $100,000. The goal for this years’ campaign is $113,113.13. We have until Aug. 31 to meet this goal. There are additional fundraisers scheduled between now and the end of August. Let’s all band together to make the final push over the goal!

On a more personal not, as sheriff, I was proud of my staff who donated their personal time to help make it a success. For the past several years we have been involved with the Relay. Members assisting with this years’ event were Dispatch Supervisor Patti Wease and husband Willard; Dispatcher Connie Mays and husband Dale; Building Technician Jeremy Prosise and wife Billy Jo; Correctional Officer Jeremy Wilton; Correctional Officer David May; and Deputy Joe Porter. Whether you parked cars, escorted survivors, provided security, participated in a team effort or were just there to provide support for the event, you represent great character and I thank you.

A great effort was put forth by our Cancer Posse Team, comprised of Dr. Charles Neal and staff, Dr. Cheryl Emmons, the Sheriff’s Office all under the leadership of team captain and Relay Chairwoman Vickie Harvey.

To all of you — thank you for your efforts and dedication in making a difference.

Congratulations Jefferson County!

Roger and Brenda Mulch
