Our View: Marion VA investigation going slowly but surely

June 25, 2008 01:06 pm

An investigation into the Marion Veterans Administration Medical Center that concluded in February found that, of 29 deaths during fiscal year 2007, three were the result of the facility not meeting standards of care.
That is three too many, and lawmakers took note, urging major change at the facility. The result is work toward better credentialing of on-site physicians as well as opening the lines of communication between the hospital and the region.
The investigation followed suspension of in-patient surgeries at the facility as well as an inspection by the Veterans Affairs National Surgical Quality Review team last summer.
We applaud the Veterans Affairs division for taking note of the disturbing findings at the facility and urge lawmakers to continue to keep the heat on the hospital that serves many of those veterans who live in Jefferson County.
