Last week, several Jefferson County families said tearful goodbyes to members of the Illinois National Guard. The many soldiers leaving home are part of what The Associated Press has called the largest deployment of the Illinois National Guard since World War II.
According to the AP, the deployment is to Afghanistan to combat a growing insurgency that has resulted in a 30-percent increase in violence in that nation.
We share the hope that all of our soldiers return home safely, and extend our sympathies to the families who will be without fathers, mothers, husbands, wives and children during a very anxious time.
And we thank those who make such sacrifices for their country.
