Our View: Time to honor our veterans

Now that Halloween is over, there is an important holiday coming up.

No, we’re not talking about Thanksgiving. We’re not talking about Christmas. Both those holidays are important, but we mean Veterans Day.

Veterans Day is a holiday that should not lose meaning. It should not be one of those holidays where children are happy to get out of going to school, and parents complain about what to do for baby-sitting. It should not be just another day.

Veterans Day is the chance for parents to talk to their children about the sacrifices that have been made so we can all enjoy the freedoms we have today. Veterans Day is a chance for everyone to say thank you to those who have served their country, and to those who continue to serve.

There are many opportunities to commemorate the day this year. There are services being held in Mt. Vernon, in Woodlawn and in conjunction with a Veterans Day Parade in Waltonville.

But even if you don’t get out to the services, that doesn’t mean you have to ignore the special day. Make sure on Nov. 11 that you make a point of saying thank you to at least one veteran.
