Welch: ’Tis the season to go shopping

It’s hard to believe that holiday shopping has already started. By the time Thanksgiving rolls around each year, it seems the following weeks fly by and before I know it, it’s Christmas.

I love buying presents and helping others, but sometimes I have a hard time finding the perfect gift. Usually there are many factors that have to be considered. For example, if someone says they’d like a pair of jeans, you have to find out what size they wear along with what type of style and color they like.

But once I have a general idea of what to get someone, I try to look at different stores to see what’s available.

Another difficult part about Christmas shopping is trying not to cave in to buy things I’d like for myself. I don’t go shopping that much during the year, so when I do, I discover a lot of new gadgets and trends.

To make gift buying less rushed, sometimes my mom and I will buy presents year-round when we’re out and about. Some of the best and most original presents appear when you’re not expecting it.

This year I decided to ask family members and friends exactly what they’d like. I thought this way they’ll get something they truly want or need. The only problem is I really like surprises.

As a compromise, I thought I could make crafts and baked goods, or spend a small amount of money to get others small gifts on the side. Lately I’ve been tossing a couple of ideas around in my head. With a few materials and a little imagination there are many things you can create. But if I write down what I’m planning, I guess it wouldn’t be a surprise anymore.
