MT. VERNON —
Over the next several days, city and county grade schools will be releasing students for the summer. That means it is time to start being on the lookout for the youngsters when driving along roads or streets.
When driving in an area you know has children living and playing in it, you might be accustomed to not driving a bit slower during the day when the kids are normally at school. As they begin their summer vacation, now is the time to make sure you use extra caution at all times in areas where children are or might be present.
According to the Pedestrian Safety Guide and Countermeasure Selection System, crashes involving 5- to 9-year-olds are the highest demographic per 100,00 people involved in crashes each year, and child pedestrian fatalities are greatest in May, June and July each year.
Those statistics, while not necessary to drive home a point of slowing down while driving through areas where children are present, certainly magnify the importance of such a reminder at this time.
