Help honor warriors

Editor:

On behalf of the Jefferson County Operation Iraqi Freedom Team, we would like to thank the various churches, individuals, organizations and the citizens of Jefferson County for their generosity in supporting our various fundraising efforts in order to provide $800 Christmas gift cards to our warriors serving within the Afghanistan Theater of Operations.

Since the inception of JCOIF in 2004, we have provided over 300 cards. One of the most special moments in being part of this Team is where a Vietnam veteran donated and told me how proud he was that our Jefferson County citizens were remembering their hometown warriors at Christmas.

He recalled being in Vietnam as a young Warrior, never receiving any thanks and looked down upon when he returned back to the States.

Another special moment is receiving thank you notes after a warrior receives their gift card. One in particular was when a warrior opened his and to his surprise, he saw the amount of his card and told his battle buddy about it and his buddy’s comment was, “can you see if Jefferson County will adopt me?”

I could go on and on sharing thank you notes. Again, thank you Jefferson County for your generosity in remembering our Warriors.

As many of you know, the JCOIF Team lost three special members, Co-Chair Joyce Poorman and her husband Pup, and Dr. Judii York. Each played an integral part in our past success. I believe each would be proud that the JCOIF Team is continuing to honor our warriors.

Due to the Privacy Act, we cannot access the names and addresses of our warriors currently serving in Afghanistan, the Afghanistan Theater or aboard Navy ships within this command.

Therefore, we must rely on their family members to supply this information.

The JCOIF Team would like to send the gift cards out around Dec. 1 and will be going to Scott Air Force Base to secure the cards towards the end of November.

We request you pass the word to all churches, area businesses, your E-Mail, Face Book site,s etc. We DO NOT want to forget a warrior. Remember, warriors must be from Jefferson County.

Please contact David Keen at 316-9502 or a JCOIF Team member with their name and address and also please continue to pray for the safety of all our military warriors who are serving our great nation!
