Our View: Volunteers make a difference every day

MT. VERNON — As the month of April winds down, many organizations are honoring their volunteers as part of national volunteer appreciation month.

But April shouldn’t be the only time we remember those individuals who take their time to make lives better for others and the community. Many volunteers don’t speak about their contributions, as we have found in the past. Instead, they shrug off their work, saying they do it for the enjoyment and personal fulfillment if gives them, not for the accolades or public thanks.

Every day, volunteers make our lives better, and we don’t even recognize it. Whenever someone makes a choice to help with the PTO fundraiser, work a concession stand at a ball game, pick up trash along a roadway, go visit someone in the nursing home, that time spent makes a difference.

Remember to thank those who go the extra mile every day, not just during Volunteer Appreciation Month.
