Patriotism lacking

Almost everyone likes to hear the words, “you’re right” but today I’m really wanting someone to tell me I’m wrong.

I thought the city of Mt. Vernon would have flags flying along Broadway in honor of Memorial Day, but when I drove to Mt. Vernon on Sunday the only Memorial Day decorations I saw were at the county courthouse. There weren’t any flags west of town either, except for the ones that a few businesses always fly. Granted, Memorial Day may not be as much fun as bike trails and a new water park, or as glorious as a new hospital, or as impressive as a new high school that’s going to bring wonderful new doctors to the area, but I think it still deserves to be honored.

I drove through a couple of other towns over the weekend, and their patriotism was obvious. I found that lacking in Mt. Vernon, and I’m sorry to say it’s not the first time.

When people don’t show pride in a high school that has more architectural beauty than the new $70 million school will ever have, and when the architects designing the new school are paid more than it would have cost to maintain the existing school, it says a lot about a community. In my opinion, what it says isn’t very flattering, and building new things isn’t going to fix the problem.
