MT. VERNON – Darick Hayes fired a two-hitter and got some defensive help from his teammates in a critical moment Monday against Harrisburg.
Mt. Vernon won the 3A regional title game 3-0.
MT. VERNON – Blake Jones was bloodied and suffered a broken nose, but he and the rest of the Rams baseball team still beat Salem 4-2 Thursday.
The matchup came in the 3A regional semifinals.
CHARLESTON – Saturday was one for the Mt. Vernon girls track and field record book.
The Lady Rams finished the 2A state finals with seven medals. The group tied for eighth place as a team with 29 points.
WOODLAWN – Brian Gamber is making the move from assistant to head coach at Woodlawn.
Gamber was approved as the next Woodlawn High School boys basketball coach at Thursday's school board meeting. He takes over for Shane Witzel, who stepped down from the position.
CHARLESTON – Connie Harre-Blair has never experienced a girls track and field state preliminary day like Friday.
Typically there's a mixture of emotion.
WALTONVILLE – DuQuoin used some late offensive thunder to beat the Waltonville/Sesser-Valier softball team 8-4 in Friday's 2A regional semifinal game.
CLAY CITY – Woodlawn held a slim lead early in Thursday's 1A regional final matchup against the host Lady Wolves.
City City ripped off the next nine runs to claim an 11-3 victory.
MT. VERNON – For some athletes the first trip to the track and field state finals can be an overwhelming experience.
That won't be the case for Mt. Vernon's girls track and field squad.
This season the Lady Rams travel to Charleston with a group filled with state final veterans.
MT. VERNON – Jared Shaner's next job will take him a little closer to his hometown.
Shaner was approved as Dixon High School's new athletic director at Wednesday's board meeting. The city is located about 25 miles from his hometown of Prophetstown.
MT. VERNON – Benton's baseball team loaded the bases Monday in the top of the seventh against Rams relief pitcher Reed Millwood.
Mt. Vernon clung to a 2-1 lead with two outs in the inning. Millwood helped the Rams preserve the victory with a strike out to end the game.
CARBONDALE – Mt. Vernon's baseball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory in Carbondale on Tuesday.
Mt. Vernon won the South Seven Conference matchup 7-0.
MT. VERNON – The Lady Rams nearly eliminated a big deficit Friday against Mt. Carmel.
Mt. Vernon's softball team trailed 7-1 early. The Lady Rams closed the gap to 7-5 late but couldn't get any closer.
Mt. Vernon's Will Walton hits a shot against Herrin on Thursday. Herrin won the match 5-4. The Rams won a pair of singles and doubles matches during the contest. Mt. Vernon is 5-1 this season and travels to Carbondale on Monday.
