ZEIGLER — The Woodlawn Lady Cardinals got in one final game Monday night and lost on the road to Zeigler-Royalton-Christopher, Monday evening, 3-1, in high school softball action.
Woodlawn scored its only run in the third inning, while ZRC picked up a run in the first, third, and sixth.
"This was a really good team we played today," said Woodlawn softball coach Eric Helbig. "We gave them a couple of runs early, and you just can't give good teams extra outs."
Gena McKinze dropped to 6-6 on the season after throwing six innings and allowing five hits, three runs, one walk and six strike outs.
"This was (a) really well-pitched game by both teams today," Helbig noted. "Their two girls were tough, and Gena did a great job, again."
The lone hit by Woodlawn came in the top of the seventh inning when Taylor Sprehe hit a double to deep center field.
"This was a nice tune-up for us heading into regionals," said Helbig. "We got a chance to see some pretty good pitching and for the most part we didn't look to bad up there, despite the one hit. Even though this was a loss, I think there was some good stuff for us to build on."
Woodlawn is 11-10 and will travel to Wayne City at 4:30 p.m. today to face the host Lady Indians, who defeated Sandoval on Monday.
"We got a chance to see them on Saturday, so they're not going to surprise us. We just have to go out there and take care of business."
