WOODLAWN — In the final year of the Mid-South Conference, the Woodlawn Cardinals have emerged as the champions on the baseball diamond with a 12-0 win over Wayne City Monday in high school action in Woodlawn.
"It was a good accomplishment for us," said Woodlawn coach Shane Witzel, whose team finished 7-1 in conference play. "I think our kids are pretty excited about it. They've worked hard this spring and so I'm happy for them."
Aaron Peterson was 2 for 3 with four RBI. Dawson Verhines was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Jordan Shoemaker was 1 for 2, which included his team-leading seventh home run of the season in the third inning, and two runs batted in.
"We had a lot of players coming back from the previous team," sad Witzel. "We had two of our better pitchers coming back, so we felt like we had a good chance.
"You still have to play the games. When we were playing our conference games, we were facing the other team's best pitcher."
Witzel also says that Shoemaker and Jordan Haarmann have provided stability in the middle of the Cardinal line up.
"They've helped stabilize the top of our line up and they're both solid defensive players," said Witzel. "They've both had productive seasons on the field and at the plate."
The Cardinals (10-8) will play today when they host Clay City at 4:30 p.m.
