Rams compete regular season tennis action with win over Flora

MT. VERNON — The Mt. Vernon tennis team finished one of its most successful regular seasons with an 8-1 win over Flora Monday afternoon at the Mt. Vernon City Park.

The Rams won every singles match, which has become the norm this season.

"Once again our singles play was dominant as we won every match without losing a set," said Mt. Vernon tennis coach Dave Junkins. "It was nice to see our seniors all close out their last dual match with impressive victories."

Coyn Mateer defeated John Schroeder, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Peter Walker bested Ben Putbuere at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-3. Blake Jennings took care of Trent Henry, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Anthony Hallam won at No. 4 singles over Andrew Conley, 6-4, 6-0. Mike Greenwalt won his No. 5 singles match over Jordan Baird, 6-2, 6-1, and Skylar Marlow defeated Jon Davee, 6-3, 6-0.

"Senior Mike "Big Game" Greenwalt was 11-1 at the No. 5 position," said Junkins, "and Skylar Marlow finished 11-0 in matches played at the No. 6 position.

"It will be a challenge to find players to fill their positions next year and maintain their outstanding records."

At No. 1 doubles, Jennings and Tyler Knox defeated Putbuere and Henry, 10-3.

The final win came at No. 3 doubles, as Blake Flota and Dan Chambliss beat Schroeder and Floyd, 11-9.

The lone loss on the day was at No. 2 doubles, as Conley and Baird beat Marlow and Greenwalt, 10-7.

"Wednesday (May 14) the coaches in the Olney Sectional will meet to determine the seeds and draw," said Junkins. "The top four singles and top four doubles teams all advance to the state tournament in Chicago, which begins May 22.

"Triad is considered to be the favorite in the sectional, with Salem and Mt. Vernon hoping to qualify players into the state tournament and challenge Triad for the team championship."
