Rams sweep doubleheader with Cahokia

Mt. VERNON — The Lady Rams of Mt. Vernon played on the softball diamond for the first time in nine days and scored a doubleheader victory over Cahokia to improve to 6-2 in the South 7 Conference Monday at Quality Times.

The Lady Rams won Game 1, 13-0, and followed up with a 19-3 win in the second game.

"I thought the girls were really aggressive at the plate," said Mt. Vernon softball coach Steve Morris. "We hit some balls really hard."

In Game 1, Kenzi Tate improved to 7-4 on the mound, while giving up only a seeing-eye single just over the third baseman's head for the only hit allowed to Cahokia.

"Kenzi was pretty dominating in her game and I thought Alisha threw a good game, as well," Morris said.

Tosha Ellis was 2 for 2 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Kim Flanney was 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Kylie Kaskie, Tate, and Alaina Reeves all had singles.

"It was an opportunity to get everyone an at-bat," said Morris. "It gave us a chance to play before we have to play Effingham, who's got a really good ball club.

"We have five games left in the regular season and I'd like to get them all in and everyone staying healthy."

In the second game, Mt. Vernon scored six times in the top of the first and six more in the top of the fourth, while pounding out 13 hits in the game.

Alisha Capps is now 8-2 on the mound with a three hit victory. The three runs Cahokia scored, according to Morris, were unearned.

"In the second game, our subs committed three errors and that's as many errors we've committed in the previous 10 games," said Morris. "Our defense has been playing really well. That's about as good as you could ask for"

Reeves was 3 for 4 with four RBI. Annie Schaubert was 3 for 3 with a double and two RBI, while Tate and Finney both finished two hits.

"The kids are playing together real well and doing the things they need to do," said Morris. "Now we've got to get some games in before the post season starts."

The Lady Rams are 22-8 on the season and will travel to Effingham tonight for a 4:30 p.m. varsity contest.

With games today at Effingham, Carbondale on Thursday, Marion on Friday and a road double-header on Saturday at Highland, Morris says that his team has a goal of setting the mark for most wins during a season.

Morris says the old mark was set three years ago by the team that Katie Wagner (who is currently on the Southern Illinois University softball roster) was a senior on.

The record is currently set at 24 and Morris says his team has a shot, if they are able to get their games in.

"I think we have a chance to win every game we play this week," said Morris. "Obviously we've got to go out and do it. We've got some tough competition. The rest of the games, none of them are going to be pushovers."
